Manchester’s Hanover building at NOMA was named as one of the best workplaces in the country at the annual British Council for Offices (BCO) Awards. Hanover took home the highly-coveted ‘Refurbished / Recycled Workplace’ national winner prize.  

Workman managed the project and provided building consultancy services from inception to completion. The team oversaw the delivery of a complex construction programme to deliver the refurbishment of this Grade II listed office and warehouse building.

The building, which was originally a Co-op office and drapery warehouse, was built in 1895 but remained unoccupied for 50 years. The two-year part-rebuild and refurbishment of Hanover, which focused on bringing the building back to life as a centrepiece of the vibrant new NOMA community, was completed under budget by the project team.

Strong technical expertise
The project benefitted from Workman’s strong technical expertise in building consultancy and its sizeable and experienced team – which is essential in complex refurbishment programme.  It requires skill to ensure historic buildings are retained, while still fit for purpose in the modern workplace and meeting occupier requirements. Current environmental considerations relies on a keen eye for detail as well as an holistic view across every stage of the whole build programme.

NOMA – a 20-acre site
Hanover was the first completed refurbishment in a series of high-quality renovation projects undertaken across the 20-acre NOMA mixed-use neighbourhood in Manchester city centre. Workman is also contracted to project manage the refurbishment of the neighbouring Dantzic and Redfern buildings, Old Bank Building and New Century House and Hall.

The completed and refurbished Hanover building now comprises 189,000 sq ft, including 90,000 sq ft of Grade A office space and 30,000 sq ft of ground-floor retail and leisure space.  Workman continues its association with Hanover, providing property management services.
